Hydrolisation of the binder (the tape becomes sticky), the oxydisation or aluminisation of the platters inside the cassettes, the tape leaders becoming brittle,... All these problems become more and more usual with time, and may be made even worse if the environment in which your tapes are stored is inadequate.
